For these reasons, it’s time to add morphine to the blacklist of the family medicine cabinet

LDue to the advertising effect in the early years, morphine has a strong mass base in China, and because it is an over-the-counter drug, it is easy to buy, so many families regard it as an essential drug in the medicine cabinet. Who doesn’t have an upset stomach, right?

The morphine drug is called domperidone. It is a dopamine receptor antagonist with anti-emetic effect. Domperidone selectively blocks dopamine 2 (DA2) receptors, mainly acting on the peripheral nervous system. Since DA2 receptors are also the main receptors in the gastrointestinal tract, DA2 receptor antagonists reduce dopamine-mediated relaxation of gastric smooth muscle.

In China, morphine is widely used to promote gastrointestinal motility and relieve symptoms such as abdominal distension and stomach discomfort. However, the use and flow of morphine is completely prohibited in the United States, and the use of morphine is strictly restricted in the UK. It is only used as a prescription drug and used under the guidance of a doctor. It can only be used to relieve symptoms of nausea and vomiting. FDA, EMM, MHRA, and Health Canada have all issued relevant announcements warning of its hazards.

The reason is that after years of clinical research, it has been found that it has serious heart-related side effects, and the risk of sudden death is greater than the benefit of the gastrointestinal tract. Especially when it is used together with some drugs that cause QT interval prolongation, the risk of sudden death will be greatly increased.

However, many elderly people in China use morphine as a regular drug. However, such people often have poor hearts and are particularly susceptible to the effects of drugs.

Therefore, I appeal to everyone to exclude it from the standing medicine and use it under the guidance of a doctor.
