LWith the development of social economy, people are increasingly pursuing the quality of life. There is nothing wrong with the original intention of improving the quality of life, and there is nothing wrong with not believing that all products on the market are safe, but before purchasing products that are directly in contact with or eaten, remember to really understand it to a certain extent, rather than Infected by “feelings” and “advertising language”, make decisions blindly.
Handmade soaps have become wildly popular in recent years, but few people really ask: Is handmade soap really good? The handmade soap has a lot of words in the promotion of its efficacy, claiming that in addition to regular functions such as face washing, makeup removal, and bathing, it can also unclog pores, supplement nutrition, neutralize and dissolve dirt accumulated deep in the skin, improve and remove blackheads, and condition the skin. Cleansing, highly moisturizing, oil control, whitening, shrink pores, exfoliate, improve roughness, add luster, etc.
With so much propaganda like essential oils, don’t you have the slightest suspicion?
When I go out, I always worry that my parents will be cheated by health products, but, hehe. People are all the same, regardless of age.
| what is soap
Soap was called “foreign alkali” when it was first introduced into China. Naturally, the word “foreign” needs no explanation, but why is there a “alkali”? Because the basic principle of any soap making is fatty acid sodium formed by the saponification reaction of fatty acid and sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda, a highly alkaline substance). The decontamination function of soap is exactly the function of sodium fatty acid, so all soaps and scented soaps cannot avoid sodium fatty acid.
| How Soap is Made
There are two main ways to make soap: cold and hot.
Generally, handmade soap adopts the cold process method, because “conscience sellers” control the temperature below 60°C during the entire soap making process in order to preserve the nutritional value of the additives as much as possible, and use an egg beater to stir the raw materials for how long. It depends on the conscience of the “conscience seller”.
Industrial production all adopt thermal method, the main purpose is to speed up the rate of saponification reaction, generally around 90 ~ 105 ° C, and even 200 ~ 300 ° C, continuous high temperature stirring for several hours, so that fatty acids and sodium hydroxide There is sufficient contact and temperature to speed up the saponification reaction.
The temperature directly affects the rate of the chemical reaction, and the low rate will cause the soap to still contain raw materials that will not react in the future after solidification, among which there is a strong base such as sodium hydroxide. Although chemical reactions have occurred on the surface of sodium hydroxide particles, the interior of the particles still retains the original characteristics – strong alkalinity. In order to complete the saponification reaction as much as possible for cold handmade soap, there will be a maturity period after the production is completed, that is, the solidified handmade soap is left for several weeks. Can the saponification reaction that cannot be completed at 60°C in the liquid state be completed in a few weeks at room temperature in the solid state?
In fact, the saponification reaction of industrial soap making is incomplete even after high-temperature stirring, so in order to remove the residual sodium hydroxide, the residual sodium hydroxide will be removed as much as possible through the process of washing with salt water and drying the soap base with hot air. Industrial soap making is a very mature technology, and the whole process has strict proportioning requirements and standardized operating procedures.
As for handmade soap, hehe.
In addition, from the above process, we can find that the so-called pure natural and chemical-free ingredients are all nonsense. No matter whether it is cold or hot, chemical reactions are required, and there are no ingredients to talk about reactions?
It was the “conscience seller” who realized that the residual sodium hydroxide due to the incomplete saponification reaction would cause damage to the skin, so he abruptly created the saying “soap hoarding”: the longer the handmade soap is left, the lower the PH value ( It can be reduced to between 6.8 and 7.5), making it more gentle and easy to use. But the truth is that no matter how long the storage time is, the pH value is still between 8 and 9.
But sometimes it is found that the PH value of the handmade soap is not high because the stirring is not sufficient during the making of the handmade soap, and the sodium hydroxide is not evenly distributed. The correct method of measurement should be to measure the pH value of the solution after dissolving it.
On the other hand, soap made of vegetable oil has oxidation problems. The longer it is left, the worse the cleaning effect will be, and it will produce short-chain aldehydes, which are toxic to a certain extent.
Another purpose of hoarding soap is self-evident, huh, huh.
| Pure natural ingredients added
Some handmade soaps will add pure natural things like Chinese herbal medicines. The claim is that these things have special effects, but washing and eating are two different things, especially soap. Even if the folks “wash dolls”, they still bathe babies with boiled potions, not to say that they just pass on the skin once. Sterilization is fine, but it is nonsense to complete skin repair, anti-aging, whitening, etc. within 20 to 30 seconds.
Moreover, the added natural ingredients will inevitably not react with sodium hydroxide during the production process. To be truly pure and natural, the only way to apply the plants from which these things are extracted is on the face.
Many “conscientious sellers” claim to use vegetable oil and the like as raw materials in the production process, but the reality will be as cruel as the mother-in-law in the face of interests. A considerable part of handmade soap is not handmade with vegetable oil, but by buying soap particles (grease factory) Derivatives), pressed on a soap production line.
Handmade soap contains a large amount of short-chain fatty acids, because of its small molecular weight, it is easier to penetrate into the skin and cause irritation.
The soap base contained in handmade soap has too strong degreasing ability, so it will be clean after use and the skin will feel tight. However, long-term use will cause the loss of lipids in the skin, thinner cuticles, and skin becomes sensitive.
Even worse, the sodium hydroxide particles in the handmade soap will denature the skin protein after contact with the skin, block the hair follicles and cause acne, which is actually advertised as “detoxification” by “conscience sellers”.
| The actual price of handmade soap
Let alone the cost price of handmade soap, let’s talk about the wholesale price. The most expensive wholesale price is around 10 yuan, while the cheap ones are between 2 and 3 yuan, while the retail price in the market is between 30 and 60 yuan. Profits? In fact, it is not a huge profit. From the perspective of the industry, the profit of the cosmetics industry is generally about 10 times, so it is not a huge profit. After all, the cosmetics industry is the third largest tax category besides national tax and local tax: IQ tax.
Almost all the so-called “handcrafts” are actually small workshops in the domestic environment, and it is hard to say whether they are licensed or not. The threshold for making handmade soap is extremely low, and it is far inferior to regular manufacturers in terms of supervision, quality, hygiene, craftsmanship, and technical strength. Most of them use a set of marketing methods to boast of “conscience quality” and “traditional craftsmanship”, and abuse “feelings” and “ingenuity” to confuse consumers. To take a step back, if it’s something like a handmade wallet, even if the technology is poor, the thing made is like shit, and at most it will make consumers feel heartbroken. But like handmade soap, if you don’t pay attention to harming your health, it is a bit immoral.
Handmade soap is not completely unusable, and it’s okay to use it occasionally, after all, our skin has its own repair function to a certain extent. However, long-term use will inevitably seriously damage the skin. Although it can also be repaired by the human body, it takes a long time.
More and more people realize this, and more and more people reject handmade soap. If you are really obsessed with handmade soap, do not give it to children at home because of the “controversy” of handmade soap ,please.
